Monika’s Story of Facing Homelessness in Arizona

Arizona has experienced a rise in its unhoused population since 2017. However, there seems to be no solution that everyone can agree on. This article presents the story of Monika Perry, a military veteran who faced homelessness in Tempe. Despite facing numerous obstacles like rejection from service providers and harassment by law enforcement, Perry found hope when she met Benjamin Jeffrey, a fellow veteran who had overcome homelessness. Perry’s story highlights the systemic failures in public support and government funding for the unhoused population in Arizona and the need for comprehensive solutions. Such stories are all too common among Arizona’s unhoused population. Nevertheless, advocates remain cautiously optimistic about the future. Governor Katie Hobbs has made homelessness a top priority, and last year, the state made historic investments in the state’s Housing Trust Fund, with increased disbursements to localities and nonprofits to address homelessness across Arizona.
