Community Spirit Shines Through Storm at Orange Tree Village

On July 14, 2024, Orange Tree Village in Tucson faced a major challenge as a fierce storm swept through, leaving over 110 residents without power for more than 24 hours. Despite the adversity, the community’s resilience and unity were on full display. Together, residents and Orange Tree Village team members transformed a difficult situation into an opportunity for solidarity and support.

As the storm raged, more than 50 people took part in the lunch and dinner provided by the community office, demonstrating their willingness to support one another during the outage. The pool area became a lively hub, with a 40% increase in usage as residents flocked there to cool off and socialize.

John, a new resident who had moved in the day before the storm, shared how the experience made him feel instantly welcomed. “Even though I was new, everyone was incredibly supportive,” he said.

For some of the older residents, having someone to talk to while enjoying Eegees was a comforting distraction.

The community’s compassion extended beyond social interactions. Team members worked with residents to handle renters’ insurance claims that paid for hotel rooms and groceries. Christina Beckwith, an asset partner with Bryten Real Partners, said it was gratifying to see residents her team helped in turn help others who needed guidance. This collective effort not only provided immediate relief but also strengthened the bonds among neighbors. As one resident put it, “We were thankful for the support, even though it wasn’t our fault.”

Orange Tree Village’s response to the storm highlights the power of community spirit. This storm may have tested the resolve of residents and the team members who serve them, but it also showcased the support and resilience that define Orange Tree Village.
