Phoenix’s Real Estate Growth Since 1980 Ranks Among Best in the Nation

According to a recent analysis by StorageCafe, Phoenix ranks as the second-best city in the U.S. for real estate development from 1980 to 2023, trailing only Houston among the 100 largest cities. The report, which draws data from the U.S. Census, Commercial Edge, and Yardi Matrix, evaluates real estate activity across single-family, multifamily, industrial, office, retail, and self-storage projects. Phoenix has been a major hub for homebuilding, leading the nation in single-family housing permits with 215,281 issued since 1980—nearly 50,000 more than any other city. The city has also seen substantial growth in other areas: it ranks 7th for multifamily development with 187,518 units permitted, 6th for self-storage development with about 11 million square feet, 7th for retail space with over 48 million square feet, and 9th for office space with 71 million square feet over the past 43 years.
