Four ways AMA members are making a difference

With Thanksgiving approaching, AMA is thankful for the many ways our members are giving back to the community and making a positive difference in our world. Every time we donate our time, money or expertise, we make Arizona an even better place to call home.

Arizona Multihousing Charitable Foundation Sponsors Walk For Autism

The Arizona Multihousing Charitable Foundation (AMCF) was proud to be the title sponsor of the 4th Annual YES Day Walk for Autism hosted by the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center.

Thirteen volunteers and AMCF Big Hearts committee members turned out to help run the kids zone, which included arts and crafts, face painting, carnival games, relay races and more. It was a memorable morning of joy and fun for the clients and supporters of SARRC.

P.B. Bell Employees Pack Boxes For Hunger Relief

Employees of P.B. Bell volunteered twice this fall with Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit that assists with hunger relief in 112 countries around the world.

The volunteers helped to pack more than 200 boxes of food which will feed more than 100 children for a year.

P.B. Bell, a developer and property manager in the Phoenix and Prescott areas, believes in the value of “Show You Care,” Chief Human Resources Officer Nicole Steltenpohl said.

“It’s always wonderful when we can get the on-site and corporate teams together to serve those in need, and Feed My Starving Children provides such a great atmosphere to do so,” she said. “We encourage other members of the community and other corporate teams to volunteer for this wonderful organization.”

Bryten Real Estate Partners teamed up with HD Supply to donate more than 400 cases of water to St. Vincent de Paul, which provides food, clothing and housing to those in need across Arizona.

The more than 12,000 bottles went a long way to helping people experiencing homelessness stay hydrated, especially during record-breaking heat.

Bryten Real Estate Partners, headquartered in Phoenix, manages multifamily properties. HD Supply serves property maintenance needs nationwide.

Agua Fria students learn about multifamily industry from The Phoenix Staffing

The Phoenix Staffing, a staffing firm serving apartment communities across the Southwest, recently donated time to help Agua Fria Union High School students prepare to land jobs after graduation.

Bry Carter, vice president of sales, practiced interviewing skills with the students and educated them about the many fulfilling career opportunities available in the multifamily industry, whether someone decides to earn a college degree or not.

None of the Avondale students had considered the profession before, Carter said.

“This is a career path that has afforded me the ability to go in any direction I wanted — to be a manager, in operations and in sales,” she told the students. “You can pretty much go any way you want to based on your goals and your dreams.”

Carter recalls she was a waitress before becoming a leasing agent at an apartment community in 1994. She soon rose into management, marketing, sales and more.

“I believe this is a purpose-filled job,” she said. “You’re finding people homes, and that’s a pretty cool job.”

Confidence is key

Carter said the #1 piece of advice she gave the students about interviewing was to have confidence.

“We all bring a unique gift,” she said. “I encouraged them to recognize their worth and that they bring something to the table no matter what age they are.”

She also coached the young people on learning to make small talk, widen their perspectives by reading or listening to books and to practice, practice, practice.

“It was an amazing experience meeting with these students who are going into the job market,” she said.

Carter was impressed with the teens for putting themselves out there.

“I’m a firm believer that if you’re not uncomfortable, you’re not growing,” she said. “I got to see their personalities and the joy in doing something they’ve never done before. At the end of it, I felt really good about helping them on one small step toward their career.”

Invitation to other schools

Any school that wants to host a similar workshop can invite Carter by emailing bry@thephoenixstaffing.com.

“I would do this for anyone who calls me,” Carter said. “I would love for us to do this more.”

Agua Fria Union High School sent Carter a note of gratitude.

“Thank you for your willingness to dedicate your time and professionalism to our senior

internship students at our mock Interview event yesterday,” the school wrote. “Your support was invaluable in providing our students with real-world experience and guidance.”
