The Common Sense Institute’s updated report on Arizona’s permitting system finds that the state’s 106 permit-issuing jurisdictions continue to impose a wide variation of fees, timelines and requirements for routine home improvement projects. The report finds that each additional day of permit approval time adds roughly four days of total project time, and that even modest streamlining reforms can cut project durations by 10 to 13%. The analysis supports a push for statewide standardization of permitting codes and processes as a practical step toward improving housing affordability.
