Zillow’s crystal ball portends more homes will hit the market next year as people give up on waiting for mortgage rates to plummet to the bargains seen in 2021, leading to more sales and a slight bump in affordability. But sky-high costs still will lock out many would-be buyers who might gravitate toward single-family rentals. Also, many current homeowners locked into low rates might hang onto their properties and rent them out as they move on to a bigger and/or better homes.
