How Zoning Ruined the Housing Market in Blue-State America

The United States’ first zoning laws were enacted in California cities in the late 19th century to exclude Chinese residents. Progressive leaders then expanded the laws to separate areas with single-family homes from renter-occupied areas, excluding working-class people from the neighborhoods of the rich.

A century of these housing regulations in some cities and states have made it all but impossible to build housing that people can afford where it’s needed most.
