Despite a continuing lack of rental housing in the Phoenix area, NIMBYs have blocked tens of thousands of units from the market. Even when projects make it, they often take years and require numerous changes, both of which add costs and increase rents. But developers are finding that working with neighbors tends to get projects over the finish line. Affordable housing has even bigger hurdles, although some communities like Glendale, Goodyear and south Phoenix lately have begun to welcome it. Not building enough housing threatens the region’s economic health because businesses won’t be able to attract employees if they don’t have an affordable place to live.
