Metro Phoenix permitted more than 39,000 housing units last year, ranking fourth in the nation for new home construction, though overall housing activity was down 15% year-over-year. Of those, more than 24,000 were for single-family homes and more than 15,000 were for multi-unit communities. The analysis of 150 major metro areas found Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth led the nation in permitting totals.
