Phoenix set to consider expansion of central business district boundaries to promote development

Phoenix City Council is considering expanding its central business district (CBD) boundaries by about 12 square miles, greatly increasing the current 2-square-mile footprint. As it stands, the CBD’s borders are generally from 19th Avenue to the west, 9th Street to the east, McDowell Road to the north and Buchanan Street to the south. If approved, the CBD would expand from roughly Thomas Road to the north, Broadway Road to the south, 23rd Avenue to the west and 7th Street to the east. This could create major opportunities for redevelopment in the Rio Salado redevelopment area in South Phoenix and near Veterans Memorial Coliseum. A vote on the plan was expected on Feb. 7 but continued to March 6.
