Rents and home prices are skyrocketing, in part because of Arizona’s shortage of more than 65,000 housing units. But instead of addressing the real causes of price increases, politicians like Attorney General Kris Mayes are looking for a scapegoat.
Mayes is suing several Arizona landlords, alleging they used rent-management software called RealPage to operate an apartment cartel. She claims the cartel drove much of the increase in Arizona rents over the past two years by keeping units vacant until they can demand higher rents.
