Tucson leaders are urging the Legislature to repeal Arizona’s ban on local rent control, arguing that giving cities more flexibility could stabilize housing costs. Arizona Multihousing Association President Courtney LeVinus said rent control has failed to lower housing costs in other cities. Instead the association supports policies that “get to the root cause, which is lack of housing,” LeVinus said, such as reinstating Arizona’s low-income housing tax credits that reward developers for setting aside a portion of units at below-market rent. “We need to build more housing,” she said.
