Government Regulations Leave Thousands Of Apartments Sitting Empty

New York’s 2019 rent regulation changes have made it financially unfeasible for landlords to renovate and re-rent thousands of vacant apartments. With limits on recouping renovation costs and proposals for a rent freeze, some property owners find units more valuable empty than occupied. Without reforms allowing greater cost recovery or deregulation upon vacancy, the city risks long-term housing deterioration.
