Why the NAHB Is Hyper Focused on Tariffs

The National Association of Home Builders is meeting “nonstop” with members of Congress to lobby for exemptions to tariffs that could hurt the housing industry and drive up housing costs.

More than 20% of materials used to build the average home are imported from China, 70% of the lumber needed for construction comes from Canada, and Mexico is the largest provider of gypsum, the key ingredient in drywall.

“Our lobby team has met nonstop with almost any member of Congress that they can find to get our message across,” NAHB Vice President of State and Local Government Affairs Karl Eckhart said. “These Canadian and Mexican tariffs are going to have a direct and painful impact on the price to build a house.”
